During the week we manage our farm, a slaughter house/processing plant/smokehouse, and a food distribution company. We love being busy and intellectually challenged. There are days when everything together feels unmanageable, but mostly it is the most amazing life I never knew I always wanted.

Valentine’s Day Re-dux
(aka Infant Sick = Valentine’s Day Postponed)
This post is definitely very delayed but we have been going through a rough patch in our house lately. The past two weeks my son (3 months old) has had a cold, which translates to no one in our house is sleeping except for the 4-year-old. By the middle of the first week we were past bleary-eyed five cups of coffee tired and approaching epic levels of sleep deprivation which culminated over Valentine’s Day weekend for me with flu like symptoms of achey legs, trembling hands and a very sensitive stomach. But no actual sickness ensued, it was just my body’s way of saying – seriously,

Cinnamon buns ready for the oven
My day job is in the architecture/interior design field and it’s been a busy first quarter. I think the long work days combined with “life” in general caught up with my body and my body won. I was down for the count part of the weekend with a terrible migraine, so it was nice to take it easy in the kitchen on Sunday and practice the art of slow living. I admit – it’s a lot easier to just buy the pre-made log at the grocery store and call it a day (which is probably why it’s been such a long time since I’ve made cinnamon rolls from scratch). I’ve never really been big on Valentine’s Day celebrating. Maybe I’m a bit cynical of the “holiday” because of the years I spent working in the restaurant industry. For folks working in the service industry this is probably hands down one of the most dreaded nights of the year where everybody comes out of the woodwork . While I love living in the country, there are certain things (mostly foods) I miss and crave from time to time. One of said things are dim sum Sundays and Chinatown in general. Growing up in Chicago I spent a lot of time in Chinatown. My family is from the neighboring community of Bridgeport, but most of my parents’ closest friends lived in Chinatown. I have fond memories of running around our family friend’s Chinese gift shop and hiding in huge ceramic pots and hanging out in the smoke-filled cafes while my dad caught up his police buddies and drank coffee. Last week I used this blog as a motivator to try and branch out and experiment with a weeknight meal. Usually during the week we stick to a simple formula: Monday is pasta, Tuesday is turkey tacos, Wednesday we have fish, Thursday we usually have some kind of pork or chicken or a second pasta dish, and Friday is pizza. They Said It Would Change Your Life….
Ever had one of those arguments that changes your relationships when it’s over? I don’t mean the “break-up” fight, no this argument is something different. This one changes how you view yourself and all your relationships. An argument that changes you.
I have experienced one of those with my best friend and it’s been wonderful-terrible. For my entire life food or drink has been a safe haven when I’m feeling blue- aka emotional eater. The argument made me aware of all these crutches. Among other things, it made me re-look at the example I’m setting for my kids.

When I saw that it was National Pie Day, I could not pass up the opportunity to take a stab at a meat pie. I definitely prefer savory pies over sweet pies. When living in Chicago I was spoiled with great restaurant options. Two of my favorite neighborhood eats served up delicious traditional English savory pies and the other made a great pasty. Another holiday season come and gone. The tree is down, stockings and a variety of chachkies are safely tucked away to a worn banker box in a corner of attic storage until next year.
